The first day of the remodel, and the change was already creeping in. Sarah felt it in her bones. She couldn't sleep. The constant noise was a steady drumbeat, an assault on her senses. She spent the morning wandering her apartment, a prisoner in her own space. She stopped answering the phone.

The ringing of the doorbell made her jump. It was just a delivery. She had to take a few deep breaths to calm down. Outside, the world was a cacophony of drills and hammers. The air smelled of sawdust and something else, something acrid that made her throat close. She wanted to scream.
